Dr. Abdollah Serajian was a player of national fencing team of Iran and had many achievements as a player of national senior and junior teams of his country in national and international competitions. Just as a part of his achievements, he won silver individual medal in 2008 Asian championships (Seoul, south Korea) and bronze medal in class-A junior worldcup. In 2013, he left national team and started as a coach in club and national teams of Iran. He was also a conditioning coach and manager of talent identification committee of fencing federation of Iran and also, fencing coach of Germany embassy school in Tehran. He passed his international coaching course presented by FIE in 2017 (Budapest, Hungary). In education, he has a bachelor of physical education and sport sciences and master of science and PhD in exercise physiology in one of the top universities in his country.
Andrew majored in Kinesiology at Penn State University and was a two-time varsity member of their NCAA Division I fencing team. His many achievements include ranking among the top 8 at the US 2018 Division IA Men’s Foil National Championships, 2014 Virginia State Foil Fencing Champion and 2014 Foil Silver Medalist in the North American Cup, Division 2. Coach Grass is a certified USFA Fencing Referee with a 5 foil rating and a NASM Certified Personal Trainer. He coached and supervised aged 12 to 17 fencers at the Penn State Fencing Summer Camp (2017-2019) and also coached at the Nittany Fencing Academy (2019-2020).
Coach Liang has national and international experience as a foilist, coach, and referee. She is a two-time Olympian, competing on the 1992 and 1996 Chinese women's foil teams. Ms. Liang-Smith is also a five-time Chinese National Champion, won two gold medals at the Asian Games, and won a bronze medal at the World Cup in Marseilles, France.
As a coaching assistant at Penn State University (1998 - 2002), Ms. Liang-Smith was a contributor in guiding the Men's and Women's Fencing teams to four NCAA Championships. She joined Olde Town in 2003.
Ms. Liang-Smith has retired from competitive fencing, but she picked up her foil one more time and fenced on the Olde Town Fencing Club's Women's Foil Team in the Summer National Championships in 2004. She proved her competitiveness by leading the team in bringing home the gold medal.
Our Assistant Director Jeffrey Gu is a highly rated foil fencer. Not only was he able to advance himself one rating up every year, he is also providing guidance and has been a leader in the AIC Fencing Club, as well as in the Virginia Fencing community. Jeffrey is known for his sportsmanship and is well-respected in our club. He is always helping other younger fencers and encouraging his teammates. He took the initiative to create a new school fencing team for Basis Independent McLean. As fundraising coordinator, Jeffrey is organizing a fundraiser campaign for SOME (So Others Might Eat) – the organization for homelessness in the DC area, and the “Campaign for Community event” to support the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation.
